Ancient Door Gods

Shentu (shēn shū) and Yulü (yù lǜ) are the earliest and most orthodox door gods in Chinese mythology, and the recognized ancestors of home protection in both Taoist and folk beliefs. Legend has it that on Mount Dushuo by the Eastern Sea, there was a great peach tree winding for three thousand li, and its northeastern "Ghost Gate" was the place where all ghosts entered and exited. The brothers Shentu and Yulü stood guard there, and from then on, evil spirits dared not enter homes to cause trouble.
