Lacquer Flow Gourd Pendant

$15.00
ColorGolden

This lacquer flow gourd pendant takes the Wudang Taoist philosophy of "heaven and earth in mutual resonance" as its soul, and the heritage craft of Chinese lacquer as its bones. The artisan applies layer upon layer of lacquer, repeatedly polishing, allowing the natural lacquer to flow and bloom across the surface, creating a one-of-a-kind flowing pattern — like mountains and rivers painted on canvas, or constellations swirling through space. The gourd, homophonous with "fortune and prosperity" in Chinese, features a channel running through from top to bottom, echoing the Taoist cosmology of "round heaven and square earth, the sun and moon within a gourd" — signifying the smooth flow of vital energy, gathering blessings and auspiciousness.

Wear suggestion

1. Wear casually around the neck; for those who follow traditional etiquette, position the pendant at the center of the chest to receive heaven and earth's auspicious qi and embrace fortune and blessings.
2. Remove when applying makeup, perfume, bathing or swimming to protect the lacquer surface from water and chemicals.
3. Prevent the pendant from bumping or scraping against hard objects; store in a soft pouch when not worn.
4. Wipe gently with a soft cloth daily; long-term wear develops a warm patina. When your mind is troubled, gently touch the pendant to calm the spirit and settle the heart.

Chinese Lacquer

The lacquer art, known in ancient times as "xiu qi" (lacquer coating), is a national-level intangible cultural heritage with over 8,000 years of Chinese history, and a quintessential "divine craft" within Wudang Taoist culture. Lacquer is harvested from the milky sap of the lacquer tree's phloem; upon contact with air it oxidizes and solidifies — the only natural coating that can form a film and self-cure in the natural environment. Tempered by time, it becomes the Oriental treasure "warm as jade, enduring for millennia."

The Gourd

The gourd is a "vessel of auspiciousness" carrying millennia of prayers in traditional Chinese culture, and a core symbol of "heaven-earth resonance, gathering blessings and storing qi" within Wudang Taoism. "Gourd" shares its pronunciation with "fortune and prosperity" in Chinese — the most simple yet sincere blessing of the Chinese people: "fortune" represents peace and well-being, "prosperity" symbolizes abundance and contentment. Wearing a gourd is carrying "blessings and wealth" with you at all times — an auspicious symbol passed down through the ages.

Channel Through Top and Bottom

The channel penetrating from the gourd's crown to its base represents, in Taoist context, "opening to the heavenly gate above and connecting to the earthly door below" — symbolizing the connection and circulation of heaven and earth qi, signifying the "smooth flow of vital energy, the harmony of yin and yang" — echoing the Wudang Taoist ideal of "unity between heaven and humanity."
